Edgefield Square

Heritage Corridor Site

The Edgefield Town Square, located in Historic Edgefield, offers symbols of heritage and living history around every corner.  The growing business district is filled with quaint shops and restaurants for visitors to enjoy.  10 of South Carolina's governors from Edgefield are memoralized through a mural located in the downtown area.  A life size bronze statue of native son, Senator Strom Thurmond stands in the square facing the courthouse.

The brick courthouse was constructed in 1839 by architect Charles Beck, an associate of Robert Mills.  A recent biographer says that, although Mills did not design the Edgefield County Courthouse, it is one of the best examples of Mill's style.

The oldest weekly newspaper in South Carolina, located on the square, is the Edgefield Advertiser.  And, just off of the square, visitors can experience living history.  The Old Edgefield Pottery, operated by Master potter Stephen Ferrell, reproduces the alkaline-glazed pottery of the Edgefield district.  Just down the road, visitors can sit and visit with Edgefield County's own carpenter, Ike Carpenter, at The Carpenter's stand.  The carpenter, recognized as a SC folk artist, carves fine bowls, spoons...and stories!  Visit The Village Blacksmith and experience this fine South Carolina craft.

Within walking distance of the square are many historical churches.  The grave of US Senator Strom Thurmond is located in Willowbrook Cemetary jsut behind the Edgefield First Baptist Church (c. 1823) on Church Street.

In addition, visitors should experience the Freshwater Coast Discovery Center, DA Tompkins Libary, and the many great shops and restaurants that make Edgefield a great place to tour, shop and play!
