Caw Caw Interpretive Center

Heritage Corridor Site Heritage Corridor Featured Partner

Situated among a 654-acre site rich in natural, cultural and historical resources, visitors will find Caw Caw Interpretive Center

Once part of a 5,500-acre rice plantation that flourished in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, the land was home to enslaved Africans who applied their technology and skills in agriculture to carve a highly successful series of rice fields out of this cypress swamp.

Still evident are the earthen dikes, remnant water control structures, and visible canals that attest to the diversity of habitats that are home to migratory waterfowl, songbirds, deer, otter, and alligators.
