International Conference Comes to Charleston

Charleston-Visitors from all over the country and across the seas are coming to port during the 2010 International Heritage Development Conference (IHDC) from June 27 until July 1 at Charleston Place in downtown.

The biennial conference is sponsored by the Alliance of National Heritage Areas (ANHA) and changes locations each year with the goal of summoning partners within the heritage development field. The week long event includes seminars, tours that serve to educate attendees on how to tell visitors unique stories by theme, and innovative discussions on how to improve the tourism industry world wide.

Charleston is the choice of venue this year, appropriately due to South Carolina being home to its own heritage areas. The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor (SCNHC) is one of 49 nationally designated heritage areas in the United States and is comprised of 17 counties that receive grant opportunities, marketing assistance, training programs and other services in order to preserve, protect and promote the historic, cultural and natural resources throughout SC. The SCNHC was instrumental in the location choice for this year’s conference, which will host an estimated 300 attendees.

“The SCNHC is proud to host the 2010 International Heritage Development Conference,” said Michelle McCollum, President of the SCNHC and current Chairman of the ANHA. “It is an honor to provide tools and resources to our partners that are committed to improving and growing the heritage development industry.  This conference is an effort to share best practices, network and learn from experts in the fields of tourism, preservation and conservation.
