Upstate Woman Gets National Recognition in Heritage Tourism

Belton-Michelle McCollum of Belton was recently named the Chairman of the Alliance of National Heritage Areas (ANHA).

McCollum, President and CEO of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor (SCNHC), has worked in the heritage development field for over ten years. The esteemed title of Chairman came after devoted service to both the SCNHC and the ANHA, and, according to the previous Chairman, it is a demonstration of leadership within a national group of preservation, conservation and tourism professionals.

"McCollum's knowledge and dedication to the national heritage area movement is widely recognized among her peers," said previous ANHA Chairman Dayton Sherrouse of the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area. "Her selection as the new chairman is appropriate recognition of her accomplishments both within the SCNHC and for the ANHA.

The Alliance of National Heritage Areas is a membership organization that works closely with the Federal Department of the Interior, the National Park Service and other partner organizations both nationally and internationally to advance the work of the National Heritage Area Program and to foster educational opportunities and forge strategic partnerships for local community development initiatives.

The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor is one of 49 Congressionally designated heritage areas in the United States and is comprised of 17 counties that receive grant opportunities, marketing assistance, training programs and other services in order to preserve, protect and promote the historic, cultural and natural resources throughout SC.
