The Sea Islands Trail

Great blue heronThe Sea Islands Trail extends from Charleston to Green Pond, South Carolina, traversing Highway 17 south and following Highway 174 to the shell-strewn beaches of Edisto Beach and includes the ACE Basin.

Travel Highway 165 to Toogoodoo Road to Edisto Island, stopping at the scenic towns of Ravenel, Hollywood, and Meggett. The rhythm of "Edisto time" begins as you cross the Dawhoo River to a land apart and unspoiled. Edisto Island, a barrier island, boasts architecturally significant churches, plantations, and glimmering tidal creeks and waterways. Tour this island and learn its rich history. Paddling, boat tours, and adventures are available.

Depart Edisto Island on Highway 174, designated a scenic highway on the island. This route offers the Grove Plantation at Willtown, as well as the town of Adam's Run. The Grove (Willtown Road, 2 miles from the intersection of 174 and 164) is a 19th-century rice plantation and is part of the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge.

The Sea Islands Trail intersects the Rivers and Rice Trail at Jacksonboro, and there you will find the ACE Basin, one of the largest undeveloped estuaries along the Atlantic coast. This area is filled with flora, fauna, and plantations.
