The 2nd Edition of Arts More! has hit the streets. The new and improved publication features fresh stories and colorful photos to entice visitors to experience arts throughout the Heritage Corridor. The original 24 page publication was expanded to 28 pages this edition! It’s a must see publication!

On the cover of this 2nd Edition is featured one of South Carolina’s finest artists…Gale McKinley. A resident of the upstate, Gale is an award winning artist, art instructor, and a tradition-bearer in Appalachian white oak basketry and medicinal herbs. Gale can often be found under one of the old oak trees surrounding her farmhouse making splits or weaving a basket as her ancestors did. Her drawings and paintings reflect her interest in the natural world around her and in the people and folklife of the area, where her family has lived for over 200 years.

The cover art was selected because of its rich significance in South Carolina’s musical tradition. “The Fiddler” as the painting is entitled was a study of Nick Hallman of Pickens. According to Gale, “I had been wanting to do a painting of Nick for a couple of years. I would go places where he was playing and sit and watch for that special moment. Then, one day at the Hagood Grist Mill his group had just finished performing. Nick was listening to the others play and was playing some harmony during a jam session. He turned a little to his right just as the sunlight came in strongly on his left side of his face. I had been video-taping and fortunately still had the camera on. I knew that was the moment I had been waiting for!”

Copies of the publication are available at participating arts locations or by emailing edgefielddc@scprt.com

The Heritage Corridor Arts Trail is one of the many niche programs of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. The SCNHC extends 240 miles across the state, from the mountains of Oconee County, along the Savannah River, to the port city of Charleston. Chosen as a National Heritage Area in 1996, the Corridor contains historical, cultural, and natural resources that tell the vibrant story of South Carolina’s centuries long evolution and culture.

The niches currently being developed are trails in Gardens, Fine and Traditional Arts, Ag-tourism and African American Heritage. Soon to begin formation are two others: Military Conflicts and Kids Trail! If you are located in the SC National Heritage Corridor,  are a tourism destination that could fall within one of these niches and are interested in becoming involved, please email us!
